Leave Taking

Leave taking
The horn sounded. We slipped silently from the dock
like a wraith moving in mist.
Terns, gulls, pelicans flew alongside
diving for fish churned up in our wake.
Gangs of sea ducks raced low across glassy waters
in vees and doubleyous
faster than the ship
faster than anything
zipping quick across the bow, fearless.
The sun began its setting in magenta clouds.
We glided under glistening arches of the Skyway
hazy in pink, rose, orange.
A dolphin played peek-a-boo off the port bow.
Just one, shy, not interested in having its photo taken
next to such a huge thing.
